Why cutting silence works

Short-form watch time is unforgiving. A two-second pause while you think of the next line feels fine in the room, but on a small screen it reads as a stall, and viewers scroll. Trimming those gaps keeps the energy up, shortens the clip, and often turns a rambling take into something punchy without you re-recording a thing. Podcasters have done this for years; it works just as well for Reels, TikToks, and Shorts.

The steps

1. Bring your clip in. Record in Reelvana or import an existing video.
2. Run silence cleanup. On-device detection scans the audio and marks the quiet ranges.
3. Pick a preset or tune it. Start with the Podcast preset for a natural feel or Tight for maximum pace, or set the threshold and padding yourself.

The trick is the padding

Aggressive silence removal has one classic failure: it slices so close to your speech that the first syllable of each sentence gets clipped and everything sounds robotic. The cuts land in the quiet, not on your words, so the result sounds edited by a person rather than a machine. If your delivery has soft onsets, widen the padding.

Threshold, presets, and re-running

The threshold decides how quiet a moment has to be before it counts as silence. Set it too sensitive and a breath or a bit of room tone gets cut; too loose and long pauses survive.
